Andrew Nguyen Fights Court Poker Ban Tied to Chicago Ring

Professional poker player Andrew Nguyen has asked a federal court to lift his gambling ban. The ban stems from his arrest in connection with an illegal betting ring in the Chicago area. Nguyen, known in poker circles as “Caesars Andrew Nguyen,” earns his living at the card table. His legal team argues the restriction goes far beyond what his case warrants and effectively ends his career.

His attorneys filed the complaint at the US District Court in Hammond, Indiana. The filing calls the prohibition an overcorrection and asks the court to let Nguyen return to legal poker.

The Gerodemos Gambling Organization

His arrest came as part of a sweep that netted 22 people tied to the Gerodemos Gambling Organization. The group ran an illegal betting operation out of restaurants in Northwest Indiana and suburban Chicago. Its leader, James Gerodemos, went by the nickname “Jimmy the Greek.” He ran the network alongside Dean Gailamas, also known as “Dean Gem.” The organization took bets, enforced debts, and operated outside legal gambling channels for years.

Federal prosecutors charged Nguyen with operating an illegal gambling business and aiding the transmission of wagering information. On paper, that sounds like a significant role. His defense team tells a very different story.

Defendant on Paper, Victim in the Files

The case against Andrew Nguyen contains a detail that complicates the prosecution’s framing. Court documents list him as “Victim 3.” The organization threatened him over a $7,500 sports bet he had not paid on time. Gerodemos sent messages making clear the money would be recovered one way or another.

His attorneys argue this proves Nguyen was never part of the operation. He did not manage the books, run the venues, or enforce debts. He placed bets. When he could not cover one, he became a target. His role, his defense says, went no further than connecting gamblers to the group. That falls well short of the conduct behind the ban now imposed on him.

A Career Blocked at Every Turn

The ban blocks Nguyen from every legal gambling venue in the United States. It also bars him from offshore sites. For a professional card player, that covers virtually every avenue through which he earns income.

This is not a casual hobby at stake. Nguyen’s livelihood depends on his ability to sit at a poker table and compete. His attorneys make this point clearly in their filing. His skills and poker relationships played no part in whatever connection existed with the Gerodemos organization. The filing stresses that no licensed gambling venue was part of his alleged conduct. What the Court Must Decide

The question before the US District Court in Hammond is whether the prohibition serves a legitimate purpose. His defense argues it does not. Federal courts do not hand out such restrictions lightly. But they do have discretion in how broadly they apply them. Nguyen’s attorneys want the court to see the gap between placing illegal bets and running an illegal operation. Those are not the same thing, and the difference matters.

The case is still active, and no ruling has come down on the request to lift the ban. The charges themselves remain unresolved. Nguyen still faces the underlying allegations, and a favorable ruling on the restriction would not erase them. What it would do is let him work while the legal process runs its course. For a professional whose career is tied entirely to poker, that is what is actually on the line.

Andrew Nguyen’s fight over the ban comes down to one question. Was he part of something criminal, or just caught in it? The court will have to decide.
