How the Law on Online Casinos in Bangladesh Works
Bangladesh does not license or regulate gambling, it prohibits it, and as of mid-2026 that prohibition is among the strictest and most modern in the region. The Gambling Prevention Act 2026 came into force on 1 July 2026, replacing the British-era Public Gambling Act of 1867. Where the old law predated the internet, the new one is built for it: it defines 24 categories of gambling activity and 14 categories of punishment, and it explicitly covers websites, apps, social media groups, servers, digital wallets, and cryptocurrency.
What the 2026 law criminalises
The penalties are severe. Taking part in traditional gambling can bring up to two years in prison. Online or remote gambling carries up to five years, and running online betting operations up to seven years, alongside fines reaching tens of millions of taka. Organised gambling and money laundering through fake SIMs, mobile financial accounts, or crypto can reach ten years. Critically for anyone in the media or marketing space, the law also makes promoting gambling through advertisements, sponsorships, affiliate marketing, or referral campaigns a criminal offence punishable by up to three years. This is why this page is purely informational.
How online casinos in Bangladesh are enforced
Enforcement is technology-driven. The law authorises authorities to use artificial intelligence, deep packet inspection, transaction monitoring, and data analytics, backed by a national digital blacklist, NID-SIM-MFS linking, and biometric verification. The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, Bangladesh Bank, the Financial Intelligence Unit, and cyber agencies coordinate through an inter-agency task force, and courts can freeze and confiscate accounts, wallets, crypto, servers, and domains linked to gambling. The only narrow historical exceptions are certain horse-racing bets and state-approved lotteries, neither of which covers online casinos.
