Nepal Online Betting Ban: Government Orders 24-Hour Shutdown

Nepal has moved swiftly to ban online betting across the country. The goverment ordered all related apps and websites blocked within a single day. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology issued the directive, and the Nepal Telecommunications Authority received immediate enforcement responsibilities. Working alongside internet and mobile service providers, the NTA began cutting off access almost immediately. It is one of the most aggressive digital gambling crackdowns South Asia has seen in recent years.

Who Is Behind the Order and Why

Minister for Communications and Information Technology Dr Bikram Timilsina led the government meeting that produced the directive. Officials agreed on urgent action because they were concerned about illegal financial transactions and capital outflow tied to the growth of online betting in the country.

The meeting also introduced a specific provision requiring the ministry to block all betting apps and websites within 24 hours. Daily monitoring requirements came with it, so enforcement updates now go regularly to senior officials, including the Prime Minister and the Secretariat. This is not a slow-moving regulatory process. It is a hard stop, enforced from the very top of government.

The NTA coordinated directly with telecom operators to cut off access through telecommunications networks. Regulators focused on identifying and blocking IP addresses along with associated URLs connected to betting activity. Nepal’s move fits into a pattern forming across South Asia. India passed legislation in August to prohibit online real-money gaming, and other countries in the region have also pushed for tighter digital gambling controls. So Nepal’s action puts it firmly in line with that regional direction.

The timing connects to a shift in political leadership as well. Balendra Shah, a 35-year-old former musician and mayor of Kathmandu, was recently sworn in as the country’s youngest prime minister after a landslide election victory. Enforcement is ongoing, and regulators are expected to refine their approach as monitoring continues. There is no formal legal framework accompanying the ban yet. For now, the NTA is working through IP-level blocks, and all service providers are expected to comply.
