$30 Ticket, $1M Win: JR Bilger’s Triple Red 777 Moment

Kenneth “JR” Bilger bought a few scratch tickets on May 9. He worked through them one at a time, saving the last for final. That last ticket was a Triple Red 777 scratch-off, and it paid him $1,000,000.
The Bedford County, Pennsylvania resident did not take the news well at first. Not in a bad way. He shook. He flushed. And he stood there in disbelief long enough that a stranger walking past nearly stopped to call for an ambulance. Nobody warned Bilger that winning a million dollars would feel like a medical event.
What Happened When Bilger Scratched That Ticket
Bilger had purchased several tickets at once, and the Triple Red 777 was the last one he got to. The million-dollar result did not register cleanly. He checked the ticket three or four times, still shaking, still flushed, still not entirely convinced his eyes were reading it right.
“I had to check the ticket three or four times. I was shaking and flushed. A guy walking out thought he was going to have to call an ambulance for me,” Bilger said.
His first call went to his wife, Becky. She did not believe him. His oldest daughter happened to be with Becky at the time, and she reached the same conclusion: dad was pulling their leg. It is the kind of reaction you cannot really fault. A $30 scratch ticket does not usually produce a million dollars.
The Win Did Not Feel Real Until He Got Home
Bilger only started to accept the result when he got home and put the physical tickets in front of his family. Seeing the ticket itself changed things. That is the moment the win became real, he said.
It is a relatable detail. The brain resists that kind of information. Bilger had won $1,500 on a previous ticket, which was his biggest score before this. The jump from $1,500 to $1,000,000 is not something the mind processes in seconds.
He put it plainly: “This is a lot more money than I am accustomed to.” For most people, that sentence would be an understatement.
The Prize Claim at Martin General Stores
Bilger and his wife Becky traveled to Martin General Stores at 533 Main St. in Saxton to claim the prize. Lottery officials met them there for the standard formalities, including the customary photo with an oversized check. Martin General Stores receives a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
The lottery did not confirm how Bilger chose to receive his winnings. He could take the full $1,000,000 distributed as an annuity over time, or opt for a reduced lump sum paid out immediately. That detail has not been made public.
A $30 Ticket and a Million-Dollar Result
The Triple Red 777 scratch-off is a Pennsylvania Lottery product. Bilger spent $30 on his batch of tickets. The winning ticket was the last one he scratched, which adds an extra layer to an already striking story. Stop one ticket early and none of this happens.
That is the part that stays with you. Lottery wins often hinge on small decisions. Buy one more ticket or stop short. Try a different game. Pay with cash or walk past the counter. Bilger made the right call by not stopping, and then nearly had to be carried out of the room when he found out what it earned him.
His family did not believe him. A stranger almost called an ambulance. And somewhere in Bedford County, a $30 scratch session is going to be the kind of story that gets told for a long time.
