888casino Faces Jackpot Dispute Over Player’s CAD 1.2M Win

An Alberta slot player says 888casino removed more than CAD 1.2 million in jackpot winnings and blamed a software malfunction that generated over 35,000 jackpot hits across Evoke’s brands. Seven months on, no adjudicator, regulator or court has ruled on the case.
888casino jackpot dispute

A Canadian slot player says he won more than CAD 1.2 million at 888casino back in March, and he planned to buy his grandmother’s farm with it. Seven months later, he has not seen a cent. 888casino removed the winnings from his account and blamed a software malfunction, and the jackpot dispute that followed has yet to reach anyone with the authority to settle it. James Kotylak, 42, from Alberta, has chased records and adjudicators ever since.

Fifteen Congratulatory Emails, Then a Blocked Withdrawal

Kotylak sat down with Pragmatic Play’s Floating Dragon: Year of the Snake on 16 March. A run of Jackpot Drop prizes started landing, including diamond notices worth CAD 85,703.77 apiece, and his balance climbed fast enough that he began taking screenshots. The casino sent him 15 congratulatory emails, one for each win it registered at the time. Nothing about the session looked irregular to him.

He then asked to cash out CAD 47,000, a modest slice of what the screen showed. 888casino blocked the withdrawal. Soon after, CAD 1,267,003 disappeared from his balance, and the operator told him those jackpots had come from a malfunction and carried no value at all.

The 734 Spins That Could Decide It

Kotylak’s strongest argument has nothing to do with the size of the win. He says the operator spotted the fault and then let him carry on playing anyway, and he counts 734 further spins placed on the affected game after that point. If 888casino kept taking bets on a game it knew was broken, the standard defence in a jackpot dispute of this kind gets harder to run.

That claim sits at the centre of his position. He has been requesting gameplay logs and transaction records to back it up, but prising those out of a licensed operator is slow work without a lawyer. He has not given up, though he admits the grind has worn him down.

A Fault That Reached Three Brands at Once

His jackpots were never a one-off piece of bad luck. An internal incident report logged 35,072 jackpot hits during the affected window, measured against a baseline of 518 for the equivalent period a week earlier. The report blamed test-version game mathematics pushed into the live environment. Engineers rolled the faulty build back inside roughly forty minutes, by which point thousands of accounts had already registered wins.

The same fault reached William Hill and Mr Green, both owned by Evoke alongside 888. Players across the group watched six-figure balances appear and then vanish, and the operator asked anyone who had already withdrawn to return the money and keep 11%. Several refused outright, leaving 888casino to manage more than one jackpot dispute at once.

888casino Points to eCOGRA, but the Jackpot Dispute Stalls

To its credit, 888casino has not tried to shut independent review of the jackpot dispute down. It pointed Kotylak toward eCOGRA, the testing and adjudication body that handles complaints of exactly this kind for players in a number of markets. eCOGRA came back with a jurisdictional problem, because Canadian players fall outside the scope of its service.

A separate look by the Gibraltar Gaming Division in May reached a different dead end. The division decided the matter turns on contractual enforceability, which puts it in front of a judge rather than a regulator. That leaves the courts, and he says the fees are beyond him.

The Courts Have Gone Both Ways

Operator terms almost always void wins caused by a malfunction, and judges have respected that language more than once. But the record is far from one-sided. Betfred lost a GBP 1.7 million case in 2021 after refusing a jackpot it blamed on a game fault. A player later beat Paddy Power over a GBP 1 million computer error.

What sets the 888casino case apart from a routine jackpot dispute is the sequence Kotylak describes, with the operator still taking his stakes after spotting the problem. A judge who accepts that version has more to weigh than a stuck reel. No court has tested either account yet, and both sides are still trading claims rather than proven findings.

Where That Leaves the Player

Alberta opened its regulated online market in July, months after the March malfunction. 888casino now holds a registration there under the provincial regulator, but Kotylak’s session predates the framework that would cover the same complaint today. That timing leaves him without an obvious regulatory lever. Any review of how the group handled those accounts would have to come from the regulator’s own initiative.

For now 888casino is holding its position, and the jackpot dispute has not moved since spring. Kotylak keeps collecting paperwork and keeps asking for an independent ruling on his account history, with no adjudicator, regulator or court currently willing to give him one. The money was meant for his 91-year-old grandmother’s farm, which he hoped to keep in the family for his daughter.
