$25M Scratch Ticket Win Makes Massachusetts Lottery History

A scratch ticket bought at a convenience store in a small Massachusetts village just turned into the biggest Massachusetts lottery win of 2026. The $25 million prize came from a $50 scratch game called “$25,000,000 Mega Money.” More interestingly, the person who won it has managed to stay completely out of the spotlight.
The winning ticket was purchased at Cumberland Farms on Montague City Road in Turners Falls, a village in the town of Montague. The store will receive a $50,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
How the Winner Stayed Anonymous
Massachusetts does not generally allow lottery winners to remain anonymous. But there is a legal workaround, and this winner used it. By forming a trust, the winner was able to have a legal representative step in and claim the prize on their behalf. In this case, the jackpot was handled by Open Door Trust of Boston, with trustee Renat Lumpau submitting the ticket and collecting the payout. Under state rules, only the trustee’s identity becomes public record. The actual winner stays hidden.
Lumpau chose a lump-sum payment of $16.25 million before taxes, forgoing the full $25 million annuity option. The Massachusetts State Lottery’s executive director confirmed that trust-based claims have become more common in recent years, particularly for large prizes. It is a legitimate path, but one that requires planning ahead. A winner cannot simply form a trust on the spot and expect a quick payout.
The Biggest Massachusetts Lottery Win of the Year So Far
The $25 million claim is the largest lottery prize paid out in Massachusetts so far in 2026. We have to note it tops a busy stretch for the state lottery. Several other significant wins have been claimed in recent months.
The second-largest prize of the year, $5 million, was won from a “$5,000,000 100X Cashword 2024” ticket sold at a Mobil station in Uxbridge and claimed on January 20. Around the same time, a $1 million prize was claimed from a ticket purchased at Sids Smoke Shop in Boston. Moreover, a $250,000 win came from a Spencer Speedway ticket. Additionally, a $100,000 prize was collected from a ticket bought at Pine Tree Market in Chelmsford.
That is a lot of large prizes in a short period, and it puts the Massachusetts lottery in a strong position heading into the rest of the year.
What This Tells Us About Scratch Ticket Wins
Big scratch ticket wins tend to generate less media coverage than Powerball or Mega Millions jackpots. However, the prizes can be just as life-changing. A $50 ticket is a serious investment by scratch-card standards. But the top prize on “$25,000,000 Mega Money” makes the risk-reward math look very different in hindsight.
The Massachusetts lottery win also reinforces something many players underestimate. That is, scratch games with higher price points carry significantly larger top prizes. Most people gravitate toward $1, $2, or $5 tickets, but the $20 to $50 tier is where the multi-million dollar top prizes live.
For the Turners Falls Cumberland Farms, the $50,000 retailer bonus is a meaningful windfall on its own. Retailers receive a percentage bonus any time a winning ticket above a certain threshold is sold at their location, which is one reason lottery retailers actively promote their past winners.
A Good Year for Massachusetts Players
The run of big wins is good news for Massachusetts lottery players and for the state itself. Lottery revenue in Massachusetts funds public education and local aid. So, naturally, a high volume of large prizes also reflects strong ticket sales across the board.
The anonymous winner has already walked away with $16.25 million before taxes. What is clear is that the Massachusetts lottery win of $25 million sets a high bar for the rest of 2026. And with several months still to go, there is plenty of time for another big ticket to surface.
