Next to poker, blackjack is the most popular card game of chance in both online and land-based casinos. It is also known by the simple name “21”. It is played with a classic deck of 52 cards in which there are four colors with 13 cards each. The colors and symbols of the cards are not relevant in Blackjack. Only the values of the cards count. Blackjack can be played alone against the dealer or with multiple players. In in-person Blackjack, the player and dealer communicate with hand movements.
The objective of the game is to get as close as possible to 21 with your dealt cards. The values of your cards are added up. You win the round if you have better cards than the dealer. Each player and the dealer start with two cards. Except for the dealer’s second card, all cards are face-up on the field. After each player has received their playing cards, they can individually decide their options (more on this later). Then the dealer shows his second card, which was previously hidden. If you have a higher total than the dealer with your cards and do not exceed 21, you win the game. Each player is checked individually to see whether he wins or loses against the dealer.
In blackjack, you will come across the same technical terms over and over again. You should know the following game-specific vocabulary.
” Black Jack “: The name of the game also stands for the best combination of cards. An ace and a 10 card add up to 21. This is blackjack. With this combination of cards, you can no longer lose the game. You can only tie if the dealer also has a blackjack.
” Up-Card “ and ” Hole-Card “: Up-Card is the name of the dealer’s first open card. The hole card refers to the face down card.
” Push “: Push stands for a draw in Black Jack. This happens when your cards and the dealer’s cards have the same value. With a push, you get your stake back, but you don’t make a profit.
” Bust “: The total of your cards is over 21. You have lost.
If you want to play using the basic blackjack strategy, you should always have the question of whether to hit or stand in mind. This should however be done after you have made a decision if you should surrender, split or use doubling down.
If these options don’t make sense in the game, or you have split a pair of cards, it is time to make a decision on whether you should hit or stand. You will always have the option to get another card if your hand is less than 21 unless you have used double down or surrendered already. If you stand, the dealer will turn their hidden card and the results will be compared against each other.
Only when you have a total of at least 12 you really have to consider whether to draw another card. The dealer’s upcard plays an important role in your decision. They have to get at least 17 with his cards, otherwise, they should draw. Because of this, the chance of the dealer busting increases if the upcard is of low value, as he will likely have to draw multiple cards.
If the dealer’s card shows a value of 2 or 3, you should only draw a card if your cards total 12 or less. If the dealer’s upcard is high, he will likely have a higher score too. So you have to take a bigger risk to win. If the dealer has a 7,8,9 or 10 card, you should draw when your card total is 16 or less. If the dealer has an ace, you draw if the card total is 17 or less.
To help you visualize the rules better, you can check the table below. To the left of the table are all the possible combinations of the player’s cards represented and at the top the dealer’s up card. The player’s action is represented in the intersection box between the row of his move and the column of the dealer.
Tables vary depending on the number of decks used and the rules. Below you can see one of the most typical tables. It is played with 6 decks, the dealer stands with all 17s, his second card is dealt face down, and there is the option to fold and it can be doubled with any first two cards. These are the rules of the most popular version of the game – American BlackJack.
The meaning of the symbols are as follows:
H: Draw (Hit)
S: Stand (Stand)
Dh: Double if possible, if not, hit
Ds: Double if possible, if not, stand
Su: Surrender if allowed, if not ask
SS: Surrender if allowed, if not, stand
Sp: Split
