NFL betting is built around one number. Not the winner, not the total, but the margin, and in American football the margins are not spread evenly. Games land on three points and seven points far more often than on any other number, because of how the scoring works. Everything else follows from that.
For a European bettor it is a night sport. Sunday afternoon in the United States is early evening here, the late window runs past midnight, and the Monday night game finishes when most people are asleep. That leaves a long, quiet build up in which the lines barely move, which is exactly when the homework pays.
This guide covers the NFL betting markets that matter, why key numbers decide your season, where the soft prices are, and what changes once the ball is in the air. Amounts are in euros.
Reviewed byFred AndersonEvery sportsbook prices the NFL. The differences that cost or save you money are less obvious than the welcome offer.
A short season, huge public interest and a scoring system that clusters results. No other league combines those three things.
Each team plays seventeen games in an eighteen week season. A run of three bad weeks is a third of the evidence you will ever get, which is why NFL markets overreact to recent results and why fading an overreaction is a genuine strategy.
Touchdowns are worth six with an extra point on top, and field goals are worth three. That means games end by three or seven far more often than by four or five. A spread of minus 2.5 and a spread of minus 3.5 look almost identical and are completely different bets.
A single game carries hundreds of selections. These are the ones that decide your season, with rough margins from the sites we test.
| Market | What you are betting on | Typical margin |
|---|---|---|
| Point spread | A team wins by more, or loses by less, than the handicap | 4 to 5% at 1.91 both sides |
| Total points | Combined score over or under a line such as 44.5 | 4 to 5% |
| Moneyline | Who wins the game outright | 4 to 7%, wider on big favourites |
| First half and quarters | Spread or total for part of the game | 5 to 8% |
| Player props | Passing, rushing or receiving yards, or a touchdown scorer | 7 to 12% |
| Teasers | Move the spread in your favour across two or more games | Depends on the price, often worse than it looks |
| Season futures | Division, conference or championship winners | 15% and up across the field |
These are the lowest margin, highest liquidity markets in the sport. At 1.91 on both sides the implied probabilities add to about 104.7 percent, so you need roughly 52.4 percent winners to break even. That number is the yardstick for every NFL tipster you will ever read.
Player props are where knowledge of a specific team pays, but they carry two or three times the margin of a spread and the limits are lower. Use them when you have a real reason, not as the default bet.

If you take one thing from this page, take this. In the NFL, the margin of victory is not spread evenly, and the most common margins are three and seven.
| Margin | Why it happens | What it means for your bet |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | One field goal, the most common way a close game ends | Crossing from 3.5 to 2.5, or the other way, is the single biggest move on the board |
| 7 | One touchdown with the extra point | The second most important number, and the reason 6.5 and 7.5 are priced so differently |
| 10 | A touchdown and a field goal | Common in games that were close until late |
| 6 and 4 | A touchdown without the extra point, or two field goals plus one | Less common, so half points around them matter less |
| 14 | Two touchdowns | The number that decides many two score games |
Most sites let you move a spread half a point for a worse price. Moving from minus 3.5 to minus 3 is worth paying for, because it turns every three point win from a loss into a push. Moving from minus 8.5 to minus 8 is usually not, because eight point margins are rare. Pay for the numbers that happen.
A teaser moves the spread several points in your favour across two or more games, at a much shorter combined price. It only makes sense when the extra points take you through both three and seven. Used on any other numbers, it is just a parlay with a friendly name.

NFL main lines are among the most efficient markets in the world. Enormous volume goes through them, and it goes through early. But the league is far bigger than sixteen main lines a week.
Primetime games, anything involving the most popular teams, and the Super Bowl. Those lines take the most money and the most attention in all of sports betting.
Because the key numbers are so important, the same game can be minus 3 at one site and minus 3.5 at another. Having accounts at three or four books and taking the better number is worth more over a season than any tipping service.
American football is stop start by nature, so live markets reprice between every drive. There is time to think, which is rare in live betting.
A team that falls two scores behind starts throwing, stopping the clock and speeding the game up. A team protecting a lead runs the ball and keeps it moving. The live total reacts to the score, but not always to what the score is doing to the clock.
Timeouts, the two minute warning and deliberate fouling stretch the last few minutes. Live spreads and totals swing hard here, and a garbage time touchdown decides more bets than anyone would like.
The same handful of habits drain NFL bankrolls every season.
The best one for you prices spreads and totals at 1.91 or better, offers alternative lines so you can move through three and seven, and posts player props early. Every site in our list above is licensed, checked on those points and accepts EUR.
They are the margins that occur most often, above all three and seven, because of how field goals and touchdowns score. Spreads that sit on or near those numbers are worth far more than half a point suggests.
Around the key numbers, usually yes. Moving from minus 3.5 to minus 3 turns a three point defeat into a push. Around numbers like eight or nine it is usually not worth the extra price.
A teaser lets you move the spread several points in your favour across two or more games in return for a much shorter combined price. It makes sense when the extra points take you through both three and seven, and rarely otherwise.
The main Sunday windows begin at 19:00 and 22:05 our time, with the Sunday night game starting after two in the morning, and Monday night around the same. That gives European bettors a full day with the lines up.
