It is also two sports sharing a name. Union and league have different scoring, different squad sizes and different rhythms, and a price that makes sense in one can be nonsense in the other.

Almost every sportsbook prices the Six Nations. What separates a good rugby betting site from an average one is what happens the rest of the year.

The better side wins most rugby matches, and often by a distance. Backing a favourite at 1.15 to beat a team two levels below them is not a bet, it is a slow way to give money away. The handicap turns the same opinion into a real question.
Nothing in rugby is worth one point except a conversion in league, so scores jump in threes, fives and sevens. That gives handicap lines their shape and it makes certain margins far more common than others, in the same way that key numbers work in American football.

In union, a team that cannot score tries can still stay in a match through penalties at three points each. In league, penalties are worth two and drop goals just one, so a side has to actually cross the line to win. Unders in the wet are a very different proposition in the two codes.

Internationals are priced carefully. Club rugby, especially outside the biggest leagues, is a different story.
Six Nations weekends, World Cup matches and anything involving the biggest clubs. Those markets take serious money.
Rugby squads are announced a day or two before kick off, and the difference between a first choice front row and a patched up one is worth real points on the handicap. Being the person who reads the team sheet properly is a genuine advantage in this sport.

Rugby gives you natural breaks. Scrums, conversions and injury stoppages all pause the action, and the market reprices in between.
A yellow card means ten minutes a man down, and against a good side that often costs seven to ten points. The live handicap moves immediately, but not always by enough when the card comes early and the sin bin period has not started to bite.
Forward packs tire. The last twenty minutes of a tight match, once the benches have emptied, is when the fitter and deeper squad usually pulls away. Live unders in the first half hour can look attractive and then die in a chaotic final quarter.

The scoring. In union a try is five points, a penalty three and a drop goal three, with fifteen players a side. In league a try is four, a penalty two and a drop goal one, with thirteen players. That changes how handicaps and totals should be read.
The favourite gives points and the underdog receives them. If you back a team at minus 12.5, they must win by thirteen or more. At plus 12.5 your bet wins if they lose by twelve or fewer, or win outright.
Yes in normal league and international matches, which is why union match betting is often a three way market. Knockout matches go to extra time, and betting rules differ on whether extra time counts, so check the market name.
They are entertaining rather than profitable. The margins are the highest on the card and the outcome depends on who happens to be in the right place. If you bet them, check the rules for players who start on the bench.
