The MMA Markets That Matter

A single fight can carry twenty selections. These are the ones worth your money, with rough margins from the sites we test.

1. Totals are really finish markets. An under 1.5 rounds bet is a bet that someone gets finished early, and in MMA that is common. First round finishes are a regular feature of any card, so these lines move hard on the smallest piece of news.
2. Method is where your read pays. If your view is that a grappler will take a striker down and hold him there, the winner price may be short but the decision price is often generous. Betting the method you actually expect, rather than just the name, is the difference between reading fights and reading names.

Where MMA Pricing Is Softest

The main event of a major card is well priced. The rest of the sport is not watched nearly as closely.

Where value tends to hide

• Prelim fights between fighters with short records, which the books have to price on very little
• Smaller promotions outside the biggest organisation, where a lot of lines are set from a formula
• Method markets on obvious stylistic mismatches, especially submission prices
• Women’s divisions, where the sample of fights is smaller and the pricing follows the hype

Where it is not

Title fights, anything involving a name that sells pay per views, and any line that has been up for a month. Those get money from people who study the sport full time.

Short notice fights are a trap, not an edge

A replacement taking a fight on two weeks notice is priced as an underdog for good reason, but the size of the underdog price is often wrong in both directions. Unless you know the fighter, this is guesswork with extra steps.

Mistakes That Cost the Most

Most money lost on MMA goes the same few ways, and none of them are about picking the wrong winner.

1. Parlaying favourites across a card. Upsets are constant in this sport. Four favourites at 1.40 combine to about 3.84 and one bad night for any of them kills it.
2. Betting the name instead of the matchup. A popular fighter with a bad stylistic problem is the classic overpriced favourite.
3. Ignoring the weigh in. Missed weight, a visibly drained fighter or a last minute opponent change should all make you re think the bet.
4. Exact round bets. High margin and mostly luck. The round totals give you the same idea at a fairer price.
5. Overrating a knockout artist against a wrestler. Power means nothing from the bottom.
6. Betting every fight on the card. Twelve fights a night is too many to know well. Pick the ones you have a real read on.
