Postepay is the prepaid card from Poste Italiane, and in Italy it is everywhere. Millions of people use it to shop online without handing over a bank card, and many Italian casino players reach for it first.
It runs on the Mastercard network, so casinos treat it much like any other card. The version with an IBAN, Postepay Evolution, is especially handy, because many sites can send winnings straight back to it.
Below are the casinos that accept Postepay, followed by how deposits and withdrawals work and what Italy’s new licensing round means for where you play.

Can you use Postepay at online casinos?
Yes. Postepay is a prepaid Mastercard from Poste Italiane, so casinos that accept Mastercard generally accept Postepay too. Italian licensed casinos commonly list it by name. Deposits are instant, and with Postepay Evolution many casinos can also pay winnings back to the card or its IBAN.
Poste Italiane, the Italian postal service, is also one of the country’s biggest financial players, and Postepay is its best known product. It is a prepaid card on the Mastercard network: you load money onto it, then spend only what is there.
That model is exactly why it caught on for online payments. A lot of Italians like keeping their main current account separate from online shopping, and a prepaid card with a fixed balance does that without any effort.
Topping it up is easy too. You can load money at any post office counter, which is a big deal in smaller Italian towns where the post office is often the nearest financial service, or transfer it in through the Poste Italiane app.
For casino play it has another advantage. You can only lose what you have loaded, which makes it a simple budgeting tool as well as a payment method.
There is more than one Postepay, and the difference matters once you win.
The simpler versions work fine for deposits. You top them up at a post office, in the app or from another account, and use the card number in the casino cashier.
Evolution comes with its own IBAN, so it can receive transfers like a bank account. That is what makes it genuinely two way at casinos: winnings can come back to the card itself or be sent to its IBAN by bank transfer.
The most common reason a Postepay deposit fails is not the casino at all, just a card balance that is a little too low. Top up first, then deposit.
At Italian licensed casinos, withdrawals to a Postepay Evolution card or its IBAN are common. The money normally reaches you within a few working days of the casino approving the request, depending on which route the casino uses.
Older prepaid versions without an IBAN are more limited. Some casinos cannot pay out to them at all, and you will need a bank account or e-wallet in your name for withdrawals.
It helps to think about this before you sign up rather than after. If you want the card to handle everything, Evolution is the one to have, and upgrading is something Poste Italiane handles, not the casino.
Whichever card you have, the name on it must match your casino account. Casinos refuse payouts to a card in someone else’s name.
Italy rebuilt its online gambling system under Legislative Decree 41/2024. The old concessions expired in November 2025, and a new set of licences took over.
| Detail | New regime |
|---|---|
| Licences awarded | 52, to 46 operators (September 2025) |
| Cost per licence | EUR 7 million |
| Duration | Nine years |
| Regulator | ADM, the Customs and Monopolies Agency |
Fewer operators, each paying far more for the right to be there, means the Italian market is now led by larger brands, and Postepay is a standard option in their cashiers.
ADM blocks access to casinos that do not hold an Italian licence, and it maintains a list of blocked domains. Playing on those sites means giving up Italian player protection, including the right to complain to ADM.
Some offshore casinos still accept Postepay because it runs on Mastercard. That does not make them legal in Italy. If a site has no ADM logo and licence number in the footer, it is not an Italian licensed casino, whatever its cashier shows.
Postepay payments fail for a small number of predictable reasons.
Online payments usually need confirming in the Poste Italiane app. If that request expires or you miss it, the casino sees a decline. Try again with the app open.
Each Postepay product has its own limits on balance and spending, and those can stop a larger deposit. Check them in the app before assuming the casino is at fault.
Italian licensed casinos usually offer a solid mix alongside Postepay. PayPal is offered by many ADM licensed sites and fast for withdrawals. Skrill and Neteller work at many of them too, while Visa and Mastercard debit cards and bank transfers cover everything else. For cash lovers, Paysafecard is another prepaid option, although it only handles deposits.
Italian licensed sites also have to offer tools such as deposit limits and self exclusion, so whichever method you choose, you can set a ceiling that suits you from the account settings.
If you already have Postepay Evolution, though, there is little reason to look further. It covers deposits and withdrawals with one card.

With Postepay Evolution, usually yes, to the card or its IBAN. Older prepaid versions may not accept payouts.
Most often the balance is too low, the app authorisation expired, or a card limit was reached.
