PhonePe Casinos

PhonePe is one of India’s biggest UPI apps, the one many people open dozens of times a day to pay for tea, taxis and rent. Offshore casinos chasing Indian players naturally wanted it in their cashiers.

Since August 2025 that runs straight into federal law. The new online gaming legislation outlaws real money games on the internet, and it makes the banks and payment networks behind apps like PhonePe responsible for refusing those transactions.

Below are the casinos that were tagged with PhonePe on our site. Further down we look at how these deposits used to work, what changed in 2025 and why the tricks some sites still use can leave you out of pocket.

Can you use PhonePe at online casinos?

Not legally if you are in India. Since August 2025, Indian law prohibits online real money games, casino games included, and bars banks and payment networks from processing money for them. A casino that still offers PhonePe deposits to Indian players is operating outside the law, and UPI transfers sent its way can be blocked or lead to frozen accounts.

India’s UPI Heavyweight

PhonePe launched in 2015 and was bought by Flipkart the following year, which brought it into the Walmart group when Walmart acquired Flipkart. It rode the rise of UPI, India’s instant payment system, to become one of the most used payment apps in the country, handling a large share of all UPI transactions.

Unlike a classic wallet, PhonePe mostly moves money straight from your bank account. That detail matters for everything that follows, because it means every PhonePe payment is a bank payment underneath, and your bank is the one who has to answer for it.

How PhonePe Payments Reached Casinos

Before the 2025 law, a PhonePe deposit at an offshore casino usually went like this:

  1. The cashier showed a UPI ID or a QR code, often generated by a payment intermediary.
  2. The player scanned it or entered the UPI ID in PhonePe and typed in the amount.
  3. A UPI PIN confirmed the transfer from the player’s bank account.
  4. The intermediary told the casino, and the balance was credited.

The casino’s name rarely appeared anywhere in that chain. On the bank statement the payment looked like a transfer to a shop or a private person, which is exactly why regulators went after the payment side.

What Changed in August 2025

India’s Parliament split online gaming in two. Esports and free social games get support and a regulator. Anything where you put in money hoping to win more, whether the game is poker, rummy, fantasy sports or a slot, is now prohibited.

The law does not stop at the operator. Promoting such games is an offence, and so is handling the money. Financial institutions have to refuse those transfers, and a site hosted in Curacao or Malta is caught as soon as people in India can reach it.

So a UPI transfer from PhonePe to a casino wallet is no longer something the system merely tolerates. It is a payment the rails are obliged to stop.

The Problem With Workarounds

Some offshore sites keep taking Indian money by sending players to personal UPI IDs, rotating accounts or so called agents.

Frozen accounts

Accounts that receive many small payments from strangers get flagged, and banks freeze them. If yours is one of the accounts in that chain, sending or receiving, you can be caught up in the investigation and lose access to your own money for weeks.

No way back

A UPI payment you approved with your PIN cannot be reversed like a card payment. If the site refuses to pay out, there is no regulator to turn to and no chargeback to claim.

Collect requests

Watch out for payment requests that pop up in the app asking you to approve money leaving your account. A deposit only ever needs you to send money. Approving a request someone else started is how many UPI scams work.

How Things Changed

The key moments for PhonePe and casino payments:

When What happened
2016 UPI launches in India, and PhonePe becomes part of Flipkart
2018 Walmart acquires Flipkart, and with it PhonePe
Early 2024 RBI stops rival Paytm Payments Bank from taking new deposits
August 2025 New federal law outlaws real money gaming and the payments behind it

A Logo Is Not a Promise

Casino footers are rarely cleaned up. Icons get added when a payment deal starts and are forgotten when it ends, and review sites, ours included, carry older tags for the same reason. Seeing PhonePe on a site in 2026 says very little about whether a payment would actually go through.

A site that actively advertises PhonePe deposits to Indian players after the ban is telling you something else: that it is happy to work around a national law. It is fair to ask how that operator would treat a large withdrawal request from you.

Money Still Sitting at a Casino

Build a paper trail

Put the withdrawal request in writing, name the bank account it should go to, and screenshot both your original UPI receipts and the casino’s replies.

Never pay to get paid

Do not top up to reach a minimum payout or to pay a release fee. Requests like that are a classic sign that the money is not coming back, and throwing more after it only makes the loss larger.

For Players Outside India

PhonePe is tied to Indian bank accounts and Indian mobile numbers, which rules it out for almost everyone abroad. Players elsewhere are better served by payment methods that are regulated where they live, at casinos licensed for their country. Across Europe that usually means a debit card, an instant bank payment or a wallet such as MiFinity.

PhonePe Casinos FAQ

Is it legal to deposit at a casino with PhonePe?

Not from India. Since August 2025 real money online games are prohibited, and banks and payment networks must refuse payments for them.

Are offshore casinos exempt from the ban?

No. The law reaches any site that people in India can access, wherever the company is registered.

Can I get a UPI casino payment refunded?

Rarely. A transfer you approved with your UPI PIN has no chargeback like a card payment has.

Why do some casinos still show the PhonePe logo?

Footers and payment pages are often out of date, and some operators use middlemen to dodge the rules.

Who owns PhonePe?

It belongs to the Walmart group, which took it over through its purchase of Flipkart in 2018.

Is the PhonePe app itself banned?

No. It remains a normal, legal payment app. The prohibition is on using it to fund online money games.
