Hungarian is a language that rarely survives a lazy translation. It has no close relatives among its neighbours, its grammar glues one ending after another onto a word, and a machine translated bonus page tends to read like a riddle. That makes a proper Hungarian version one of the more honest signals you will find in a casino lobby.
It is also a language spread over several borders. Hungary runs one of the most closed online casino markets in the EU, while about a million Hungarians in Romania, several hundred thousand in Slovakia and sizeable communities in Serbia and Ukraine live under entirely different rules.
Every casino in our database that runs a Hungarian version appears further down, no matter which country you open this page from. Whether you may actually play at any of them depends on the law where you live, so look that up first.

If you live in Hungary, only a handful of sites tied to land-based casino concessions hold an SZTFH licence, and they run fully in Hungarian. Unlicensed sites are blocked and Hungarian banks refuse payments to them. Hungarian speakers in Romania, Slovakia or Serbia should look at their own country's licensed operators first; several international casinos in our list also offer a complete Hungarian version.

Self Exclusion and Support in Hungarian
The borders drawn at Trianon in 1920 left large Hungarian communities in the neighbouring states, and they are still there. Romania’s 2021 census counted just over a million ethnic Hungarians, concentrated in Székely Land and along the western border. Slovakia recorded about 422,000 people of Hungarian nationality the same year, mostly in the south. In Serbia, almost all of the roughly 184,000 Hungarians counted in 2022 live in Vojvodina, where they make up about a tenth of the population. Transcarpathia in western Ukraine has a smaller community as well.
So a Hungarian casino version is not only aimed at Budapest. Plenty of the players who open it have a Romanian, Slovak or Serbian address, and their own country decides which casinos may serve them. That is why Hungarian turns up at dozens of casinos in our database, far more than the closed Hungarian market would justify.
Under Hungarian law, an online casino licence is only open to a company that already operates a land-based casino in Hungary. Our Hungary country guide has the details; two points matter most here.
The first online casino licence went to LVC Diamond, part of the Las Vegas Casino group, in February 2017, for Vegas.hu. A few more have followed, all run by the same small circle of land-based groups. The EU Court of Justice said in 2018, in case C-3/17, that demanding a land-based casino is an unjustified restriction, but the rule stayed on the books.
The state owned Szerencsejáték Zrt., the company behind the national lotteries and Tippmix, lost its online sports betting monopoly on 1 January 2023, when EEA operators became eligible for betting licences through a local representative. Online casino was left exactly where it was, and big international brands have mostly stayed away from the betting licences too, seeing the terms as tilted towards the state company.
Hungary started blocking unlicensed gambling domains back in 2014, largely paused it for a while after EU court rulings, and switched it back on once the 2023 reform was in place. In February 2024 the regulator SZTFH, which goes by Supervisory Authority for Regulatory Affairs in English, said around 450 casino, betting and crypto gambling domains had been blocked.
Since 1 July 2023 the block reaches into your bank account too. Hungarian payment providers have to stop transactions to and from unlicensed foreign gambling sites, and SZTFH keeps a register of restricted payment accounts that the banks must check. If you live in Hungary, a foreign site with a lovely Hungarian lobby is simply not a legal option, and we will not suggest ways around that.
The authority itself is in flux. In autumn 2026 parliament stripped SZTFH of its powers over concessions, and the government says it plans to abolish the body and hand its tasks to other institutions. For now gambling supervision stays with SZTFH.
A Hungarian in Cluj, Komárno or Subotica reads the same casino terms as a player in Debrecen. The law that applies, though, is the one where they live, and it looks nothing like Hungary’s.
| Country | Hungarian community | Online casino rules |
|---|---|---|
| Romania | About 1 million (2021 census) | Licences from the regulator ONJN; unlicensed sites are blacklisted and blocked by internet providers |
| Slovakia | About 422,000 (2021 census) | Private online casino licences since 2019; unlicensed sites are blocked |
| Serbia | About 184,000 (2022 census), nearly all in Vojvodina | Licensing under the Law on Games of Chance, run by the finance ministry |
Our guides to casinos in Romania and casinos in Slovakia go through those markets properly. Hungarians in Transcarpathia fall under Ukrainian law, which we do not cover here, so check the position locally first.
The language is shared. The money is not. A Hungarian speaker in Slovakia pays in euro, one in Romania in lei, one in Vojvodina in dinars, and only players in Hungary think in forint. A casino that offers Hungarian but only forint, or only euro, has quietly decided which Hungarians it wants. Players in southern Slovakia will find our euro casinos page more useful.
Inside Hungary the licensed sites take bank cards and bank transfers, and Vegas.hu also listed prepaid cards and e-wallets when it launched. Hungarian banks have had instant transfers since March 2020, but from a Hungarian account they only reach casinos SZTFH has licensed.
Whatever the currency, read the payout side before the deposit side. The withdrawal page is where translations most often run dry, and where a missing sentence costs actual money.
Hungarian stacks endings onto words and orders them in ways English never does, which is exactly where translation tools trip. These are the places worth a closer look:
One slip is forgivable. Three or four tell you how the casino will treat a Hungarian complaint.
Two kinds of help matter here, and only one of them crosses the border.
Licensed Hungarian casinos point players to the játékosvédelmi nyilvántartás, the player protection register kept by SZTFH, alongside self limitation and self exclusion. SZTFH also runs a player protection green number. None of it reaches an offshore casino, which has its own tools at best and nothing at worst.
When Vegas.hu launched it promised round the clock support in Hungarian and English, and that is a fair bar. At an international site, write to the chat in Hungarian and ask which documents they will want before the first payout. A clear reply in fluent Hungarian is a good sign. An English reply, or Hungarian that sounds like a tool wrote it, is a preview of the day you have a real problem.
In Hungary the honest answer is short. The legal choice is the small group of sites licensed by SZTFH, everything else is blocked and payments to it are refused, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
In Romania, Slovakia and Serbia the field is wider, because each country licenses its own operators. Start with the licensed ones where you live, then use the Hungarian version as a quality filter: bonus rules, payouts and the chat should all hold up in Hungarian. If they do, you have found an operator that took Hungarian seriously. If the lobby is the only Hungarian thing on the site, keep looking.
No. Online casino play in Hungary is only legal at sites licensed by SZTFH, and those licences are tied to land-based casino concessions. A foreign site is unlicensed for Hungarian residents whether it speaks Hungarian or not, its domain can be blocked and Hungarian banks must refuse payments to it.
Because Hungarian speakers do not only live in Hungary. About a million live in Romania, over 400,000 in Slovakia and around 184,000 in Serbia, in countries that license their own operators. An international casino can serve those players in Hungarian while keeping Hungary itself closed.
No. From 1 January 2023 operators based in the EEA could apply for Hungarian online sports betting licences, which ended the Szerencsejáték Zrt. monopoly in that area. Online casino was not part of the change and still requires a link to a land-based casino concession in Hungary.
It should not. Since 1 July 2023 Hungarian payment providers have had to block transactions to and from unlicensed foreign gambling sites, and SZTFH keeps a register of restricted accounts for them to check. We do not recommend trying to get around it.
The term you will usually meet is megforgatási követelmény. Look for it in the bonus terms and check that the casino uses it consistently and explains the multiplier, the eligible games and the time limit in Hungarian rather than falling back on English.
Gambling supervision sits with SZTFH, the Supervisory Authority for Regulatory Affairs. In autumn 2026 parliament removed its powers over concessions, and the government has said it intends to abolish the authority and spread its tasks across other bodies, so the regulator’s name may change.
