Chinese Language Online Casinos

Chinese has more native speakers than any other language, and it is one of the easiest for a casino to get wrong. Well over a billion people speak it, yet mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Singapore do not license a single private online casino. An honest page about Chinese language casinos has to start with the law.

Here you get the two written forms, who reads which, what each market allows, and how Chinese speakers in Canada, Britain or Europe can tell whether a Chinese version was made by people or by a converter. Nothing here is meant for players inside those Asian markets, and you will find no tips for getting around their rules.

Our casino list further down includes all the open casinos we track that run a Chinese version, and nobody sees a shorter list because of where they log on. Being listed does not mean you are welcome, so read each casino’s restricted countries and your local licence rules first.

Where can Chinese speakers play at online casinos legally?

Not in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan or Singapore, where no private online casino is licensed and playing at offshore sites breaks the law. Chinese speakers living in a country with a legal market, such as the UK or Ontario in Canada, can play at casinos licensed there, and a number of those run Simplified or Traditional Chinese. Australia is different: online casinos may not serve Australian residents at all.

Simplified, Traditional and the Markets Behind Each Script

Ask a casino whether it supports Chinese and the right follow-up is: which one? Written Chinese comes in two scripts. Simplified characters are the standard in mainland China and are used officially in Singapore and Malaysia. Traditional characters are what readers in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau grew up with. Speech splits differently, Mandarin on the mainland and in Taiwan, Cantonese in Hong Kong and Macau, but a casino only has to get the writing right.

When a lobby just says “Chinese”, open the language menu. 简体中文 is Simplified, 繁體中文 is Traditional, and some sites carry only one of them.

That choice hints at the intended audience, since the largest Simplified readership by far lives where online gambling is prohibited. Chinese communities abroad trace their roots to all of these places, so both scripts are read in Vancouver, London and Sydney alike.

Mainland China Allows Lotteries and Nothing Online

Mainland China permits two forms of gambling: the state Welfare Lottery, running since 1987, and the Sports Lottery, launched in 1994. Everything else is prohibited, online gambling included, and overseas gambling sites are blocked.

Amendment XI pushed the law past the border

Since 1 March 2021, an amendment to the Criminal Law punishes opening a casino with up to ten years in prison in serious cases, and it made organising Chinese citizens to gamble abroad a crime of its own. In August 2020 the Ministry of Culture and Tourism had already announced a blacklist of overseas destinations that lure Chinese tourists with gambling.

Beijing goes after the money trail

For 2024 the Ministry of Public Security reported some 73,000 cross-border gambling cases and more than 4,500 illegal betting platforms shut down, with several departments working to cut the payment flows behind them. An offshore lobby in Simplified Chinese changes none of this for someone on the mainland.

Hong Kong and Macau: Two Gambling Cities, No Online Casino

Hong Kong has no casino at all, online or on land. Betting is legal only through the Hong Kong Jockey Club: horse racing, football, the Mark Six lottery and, since lawmakers approved it in September 2025, basketball. Betting with anyone else breaks the Gambling Ordinance, with penalties rising to HK$30,000 (about EUR 3,300) and nine months in prison for repeat offenders, and that covers residents using foreign gambling sites too.

Macau is the opposite on land and the same online. Law 16/2022 overhauled the gaming law in December 2022, and six concessionaires have run the casinos on ten-year terms since January 2023. No concession covers online casino games, and the Law to Combat Illegal Gambling Crimes, in force since 29 October 2024, punishes unauthorised online gambling and its promotion with one to eight years in prison, wherever the servers sit.

A reader of Traditional Chinese in either city has no legal online casino at home, whatever a lobby claims.

Taiwan, Singapore and the Rest at a Glance

Taiwan and Singapore complete the core Chinese reading markets, and neither tolerates offshore casinos.

Market Script Online casino for residents What the law says
Mainland China Simplified Prohibited Organising gambling abroad is a crime since 2021
Hong Kong Traditional Illegal, foreign sites included Only the Jockey Club may take bets
Macau Traditional No online concession 1 to 8 years for illegal online operators
Taiwan Traditional Expressly criminal since 14 January 2022 Fines up to NT$50,000 (about EUR 1,400)
Singapore Simplified Only Singapore Pools may offer remote gambling Players risk S$10,000 (about EUR 6,700) or six months

Taiwan’s amendment closed a loophole: the Criminal Code used to tie gambling to a public place, and now names the internet and other electronic channels outright. Singapore’s Gambling Regulatory Authority, running since August 2022, can order internet providers and banks to block unlawful sites and payments. Malaysia, the other big Simplified market, allows casino games at Resorts World Genting, and police there detained close to 1,900 people in a 2023 sweep on online gambling.

Chinese Speakers in Countries With a Licensed Market

The rules that bind you are those of the country you live in, not your passport or the script you read.

Ontario against the rest of Canada

Since April 2022 Ontario has let privately run casinos register with its regulator, so Chinese speakers in Toronto can pick between those sites. In most other provinces the legal online route is the provincial lottery corporation’s own site. Our Canada guide sets out the province by province picture.

Britain says yes, Australia says no

In the UK, a UK Gambling Commission licence is what to look for, and a Chinese version is a welcome extra rather than a reason to pick a site. Australia is the hard case. Close to a million people there spoke Mandarin or Cantonese at home in the 2021 census, yet the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 bars online casinos from serving Australians, and ACMA has ordered internet providers to block such sites since November 2019.

Funding an Account Outside China

The cashier is where a diaspora player should forget about home. A Chinese lobby may show methods aimed at the mainland, but you need what works where you live: debit cards, bank transfers and e-wallets in your local currency. In Britain, licensed sites have not accepted credit cards for gambling since 14 April 2020, so plan on debit cards or e-wallets there. Players paying in dollars will find more on our Canadian dollar casinos page.

UnionPay is the card brand many Chinese families carry, and you may spot its logo in a cashier. A card from a mainland bank is still a mainland account, though, and Beijing names payment channels as a target of its crackdown. Keep casino money in a local account in your country of residence, and treat any site offering to move renminbi for you as a red flag.

Converted Chinese Versus Chinese Written for You

Doing Chinese properly is two jobs. A careful operator has the Traditional version localised by someone who knows how Taiwan or Hong Kong phrase things. A cheap one pushes the Simplified text through a character converter. The giveaways:

  • Mainland words in Traditional dress. Software is 软件 in Simplified but 軟體 in Taiwan, and information is 信息 against 資訊. Mainland vocabulary on a Traditional page means conversion, not localisation.
  • The wrong form of 发. One Simplified character maps to two Traditional ones, 發 (send, issue) and 髮 (hair). Converters that swap character by character produce nonsense like 頭發 for hair.
  • Two scripts on one screen. Simplified menus above Traditional terms mean nobody read the pages together.
  • Turnover rules left in English. Chinese casino terms usually call wagering 投注流水 or just 流水. If promotions read in Chinese but the turnover rule is still in English, the effort stopped at the shop window.

No single slip makes a site unsafe, but together they show how much attention Chinese readers get, and support tends to follow suit.

Where That Leaves a Chinese Reader

If you live in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan or Singapore, none of the Chinese language casinos on this page is legally open to you, whatever licence badge it shows, and we will not pretend otherwise.

If you live in the UK, in Ontario or anywhere else with a working licence system, start from that licence, pay in your local currency and let the script settle the tie. A site that bothered with proper Simplified and Traditional versions has usually bothered with the rest as well.

Chinese Language Casinos FAQ

Is online casino legal in mainland China?

No. Mainland China allows only the state Welfare Lottery and Sports Lottery. Online gambling is prohibited, overseas gambling sites are blocked, and since March 2021 the Criminal Law also punishes organising Chinese citizens to gamble abroad. A Chinese language version on an offshore casino does not make it legal for anyone living on the mainland.

Can I play at online casinos from Hong Kong?

No. Only the Hong Kong Jockey Club may take bets, on horse racing, football, basketball and the Mark Six lottery. There is no licensed casino online or on land, and Hong Kong residents who bet with unlicensed operators, foreign websites included, commit an offence that can bring fines and prison.

Does Macau have legal online casinos?

No. Macau’s six concessionaires run land-based casinos only, and online casino gaming is not authorised. Since 29 October 2024 the Law to Combat Illegal Gambling Crimes punishes unauthorised online gambling operations and their promotion with one to eight years in prison. The only legal remote product is sports betting through Macau Slot.

What is the difference between Simplified and Traditional Chinese casinos?

The script, and usually the audience. Simplified is standard in mainland China, Singapore and Malaysia, while Traditional is used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. A casino with a properly localised Traditional version, using local vocabulary rather than converted mainland text, has generally put more care into its Chinese speaking players.

Are there legal Chinese language casinos for players in Canada or the UK?

Yes, provided the casino is licensed for the place you live. In Ontario that means a site registered in the provincial market, elsewhere in Canada usually the provincial lottery site, and in the UK a UK Gambling Commission licence. Some of those sites offer Chinese, but the licence comes first.

Can I use UnionPay at online casinos?

A few cashiers show it, but a card issued by a bank in mainland China stays under mainland rules, and Chinese authorities explicitly target payment channels linked to gambling. If you live abroad and play legally, use a card or e-wallet from your local bank in your local currency instead.
