French Language Online Casinos

French is the awkward one among the big casino languages. The largest French speaking country in Europe still does not allow online casino games, so a polished French lobby on an offshore site is often aimed at a market that has shut the door on it. Meanwhile the French speakers who do have legal options live under three or four completely different rulebooks.

This guide follows the language rather than one country: France, Belgium, the French speaking cantons of Switzerland, Luxembourg and, briefly, Quebec. It also covers how to read French bonus terms without getting caught out.

The list below shows every casino in our database that has a French language version, wherever you happen to be connecting from. Because of that, check the licence rules in the country you live in before you sign up anywhere.

Can I play at an online casino in French?

Yes, but where you live decides which ones are legal. In France no online casino is licensed, only betting, horse racing and poker. In Belgium the nine land based casinos run the licensed online sites, and in Switzerland only Swiss casino concession holders may offer online games. Plenty of international casinos also have a French version, and the list on this page shows the ones in our database.

France Licenses Poker and Betting, Never the Casino

France opened its online gambling market with the law of 12 May 2010, but only halfway. Sports betting, horse race betting and poker can be licensed online. Slots, roulette and blackjack cannot. The regulator created by that law, ARJEL, became the Autorité nationale des jeux (ANJ) in June 2020, and the list of permitted products did not change on the way. Our France page covers the licensed side.

Legal online casino has looked close more than once. In October 2024 the government slipped an amendment into the draft 2025 budget to open the market, then withdrew it less than a week later after the land based casinos pushed back. That government fell in December 2024 and the plan went with it.

In June 2026 the incoming ANJ chair, Pascal Chevremont, said any opening has to come from government and parliament, not the regulator. Until then a player in France has no licensed online casino at all.

One Language, Five Different Rulebooks

Outside France the picture changes border by border, and the French text on a casino tells you nothing about which system you are in.

Where you live Who may run an online casino What that means in practice
France Nobody; the ANJ licenses betting, horse racing and poker only Every online casino taking French players is unlicensed there
Belgium Only the holders of the nine land based casino licences Age 21, a standard EUR 200 weekly deposit limit, no bonuses
Switzerland Only holders of a Swiss casino concession Licensed Swiss sites; unlicensed foreign sites are blocked
Luxembourg No online licence exists; Casino 2000 is the only casino Reform under discussion since 2025, nothing in force yet
Quebec Loto-Québec, the provincial operator A provincial monopoly with its own online casino

French is also official across much of West and Central Africa, where rules differ by country and fall outside this guide.

Belgium Ties Every Licensed Online Casino to a Real One

For French speakers in Wallonia and Brussels the licensed route is clear but narrow.

No casino building, no A+ licence

The Belgian Gaming Commission only hands out the A+ licence for online casino games to companies that already hold an A licence for a physical casino, and Belgian law allows nine of those. The number of legal Belgian online casinos is therefore capped by the number of real ones. Sites without a Belgian licence go on a list the Commission keeps, and Belgian internet providers are asked to block them.

Rules you notice at registration

The minimum age for all games of chance is 21. Each licensed site applies a standard deposit limit of EUR 200 per week, bonuses are banned online, and advertising for gambling has been almost completely prohibited since 2023. Self exclusion runs through EPIS, the national register of excluded players. A French site that promises Belgians a welcome package is not Belgian licensed, whatever it claims. Our page on casinos with a Belgian licence has the details.

Romandie, Luxembourg and Quebec

Switzerland rewrote its rules with the Money Gaming Act, in force since 1 January 2019. Online casino games may only be offered by companies holding a Swiss casino concession, and for the concession period that began in 2025 twelve casinos have the right to run games online. Foreign sites without that licence end up on blocking lists, first published in 2019, that Swiss internet providers use to cut off access. For players in Geneva, Vaud, Neuchâtel or the Jura that means a short list of Swiss brands, found under Swiss licensed casinos.

Luxembourg is the quiet outlier. Its gambling law dates from 1977, the Loterie Nationale and Casino 2000 in Mondorf-les-Bains are the only legal operators, and there is no online casino licence. In 2025 the justice minister confirmed plans to give those two exclusive rights, and letting Casino 2000 run an online platform is on the table, but nothing had been adopted when we checked.

Quebec, with its state operator Loto-Québec and its own casino vocabulary, has a separate guide: Canadian French casinos.

Why Offshore Casinos Keep Their French Version

With France closed, you would expect international casinos to drop French. Well over a hundred open casinos in our database list it anyway.

The translation pays off in many countries at once

One French version reaches Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Canada and large parts of Africa, so it earns its keep even if France itself were never on the table.

France is blocked on paper, not always in practice

Honestly, a lot of French text on offshore sites is written for players in France. A study by PwC for the ANJ, published in November 2023, counted 510 illegal gambling sites aimed at France, and 65 percent of them offered casino games. Since March 2022 the ANJ can order blocks itself instead of going through the courts, which has sped things up, but blocked brands keep reappearing on mirror sites under new addresses. Play there from France and nobody French will help you if a withdrawal stalls.

French Bonus Terms Worth Reading Twice

French casino vocabulary is settled enough that sloppy translation shows. Look for these before accepting anything.

  • Conditions de mise is wagering. Check whether the multiplier applies to the bonus alone or to « bonus + dépôt », which can double the amount you have to play through.
  • CGU (conditions générales d’utilisation) are the general terms. If that link opens an English page, the French version does not really exist.
  • Tours gratuits are free spins. The line that matters is usually the one about winnings being plafonnés, meaning capped.
  • Mise maximale is the highest stake allowed while a bonus is active, and breaking it even once can cost you the bonus winnings.
  • Justificatif de domicile is proof of address. A serious French version lists which documents are accepted and how recent they must be.

Literal oddities such as « tours libres » or « exigence de pari » are a hint that a machine did the work and nobody fluent checked it.

Cashier and Chat in a Francophone Setup

Payment habits split along national lines, not linguistic ones. Bancontact is the everyday card scheme in Belgium, TWINT is the Swiss payment app, and in France most bank cards run on the Carte Bancaire network. A site claiming to serve French speakers without any local method for your country is built for somebody else.

Belgium, France and Luxembourg use the euro, but a player in Lausanne paying from a franc account loses a little on every conversion if the site only runs in EUR.

Belgian and Swiss licensed operators answer chat in French because their home market speaks it. Offshore sites often run a small French team in the daytime and switch to English after that. Before depositing, ask in French what documents they need for a first payout, and judge the reply.

Matching the Casino to Your Address

Living in France

The legal choice is poker and betting with an ANJ licence, and that is it until parliament says otherwise. Any French language casino that lets you play slots from France is operating without permission, whatever its lobby looks like.

Belgium, Romandie and Luxembourg

In Belgium and Switzerland the local licence is worth the trade off: fewer bonuses, but a regulator that speaks your language and answers to you. Luxembourg players have no local online option yet, which makes the checks in this guide matter even more.

French Language Casinos FAQ

Is it legal to play online casino games in France?

No. Since the 2010 law, France licenses only online sports betting, horse race betting and poker. Casino games such as slots, roulette and blackjack cannot be licensed online, and a proposal to change that was withdrawn in October 2024. Land based casinos remain the only legal place to play them.

Why does a casino offer French but refuse players from France?

French serves players in Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Canada and francophone Africa. A casino can keep a French version for those markets while blocking France, where it has no licence and where the ANJ has the power to have unlicensed sites blocked.

Can I get a welcome bonus at a Belgian online casino?

Not at a licensed one. Belgium has banned online bonuses, applies a standard weekly deposit limit of EUR 200 per licensed site and sets the minimum age at 21. A French language site promising Belgian players a bonus package is not operating under a Belgian licence.

Which casinos can players in French speaking Switzerland use legally?

Only online casinos run by holders of a Swiss casino concession. Since 2019 the regulators have published lists of unlicensed foreign sites that Swiss internet providers block. The licensed Swiss brands are listed on our Swiss licence page.

What does conditions de mise mean in French casino terms?

It is the wagering requirement: how many times you must stake a bonus, or bonus plus deposit, before winnings can be withdrawn. Always check which amount the multiplier applies to, and compare the French figure with the English terms if both exist.

Is Quebec French covered on this page?

Only in passing. Quebec has its own operator, Loto-Québec, and its own casino vocabulary, so it has a separate Canadian French guide on CasinoDaddy. This page focuses on French as used in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg.
