What is Lightning Box known for?

Lightning Box is an Australian slot studio founded in Sydney in 2004 by Peter Causley and David Little, two former Aristocrat and IGT designers. It began with land based games for North America, went online in 2010 and was bought by Scientific Games, now Light & Wonder, in 2021. It is best known for Silver Lion, Chicken Fox and the Lightning series.

Two Former Aristocrat and IGT Designers in Sydney

Peter Causley and David Little founded Lightning Box in Sydney in 2004. Both had designed games at Aristocrat and IGT, and Causley’s own career goes back to Aristocrat in 1993, working on game design and product marketing in Sydney and the USA.

The studio’s first years had nothing to do with online casinos. It made exclusive games for land based casinos in North America, developed with IGT, until the global financial crisis ended that arrangement. In 2010 Lightning Box moved online through Chartwell, and from 2015 it was mainly an online supplier, partnering with NYX on the way. In 2018 the team moved into a new office at Darling Harbour.

That background is the key to the catalogue you meet in Lightning Box casinos: slots designed by people who learned the trade on casino floors, and you can feel it in a game like Silver Lion.

Why Lightning Box Casinos Feel Built on Maths First

Ask Causley how a Lightning Box slot is made and the answer is always the same: the maths comes first. The core mechanic is designed before anyone touches art, animation or sound, which he has said is the reverse of how many studios work.

“It’s the maths that gets the player to continue playing,” he told VegasSlotsOnline in 2022, once the novelty of a theme has worn off. He has also said the studio is not interested in innovation for the sake of it, and that players “won’t tolerate mediocrity”.

You can see the philosophy in Chicken Fox, one of the two games Causley names as player favourites. On paper it is a plain 5×3 slot with 25 lines, wilds and free spins, yet SlotCatalog lists a top win of 13,500x the stake. That is the design idea Causley describes, and it is worth remembering in Lightning Box casinos: a simple looking screen can still hide a big top prize.

Quickfire, Portugal and Canada: Lightning Box Casinos on the Map

A small Australian studio needs partners to reach players on the other side of the world, and Lightning Box collected them one by one.

A three year Quickfire deal, 2017

In October 2017 the studio signed a three year deal with Quickfire, the Microgaming distribution platform, which Causley described as having more than 200 operators integrated. Silver Lioness 4x went live there first, in 2018.

Nine games cleared in Portugal

In May 2018 Portugal’s gambling regulator gave Lightning Box permission to release nine games through the SG Digital platform, Silver Lion, Respin Rhino and Dolphin Gold among them.

Loto-Québec and British Columbia

The first Canadian titles launched with Loto-Québec in late 2019. In May 2020 the studio was licensed by British Columbia’s Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch to supply BCLC, and Silver Lion was the first game to go live there.

Scientific Games Buys the Studio, Then Becomes Light & Wonder

The two companies already knew each other well. Lightning Box had been a partner on Scientific Games’ OpenGaming platform since its early days, so when SG bought Lightning Box in August 2021, it was less a takeover than a formal marriage. The price was not disclosed. At that point the studio was live with more than 50 operators across the US, Canada and Europe, BetMGM, FanDuel, Unibet, LeoVegas and Betsson among them.

Seven months later, in March 2022, Scientific Games started doing business as Light & Wonder. The old Lightning Box website now redirects to Light & Wonder, but the studio has kept its name on new games: SlotCatalog lists releases such as Lightning ShenLong 2 as recently as July 2026, so Lightning Box casinos are still getting new titles.

Silver Lion and Its Lioness, the Pride of Lightning Box Casinos

Silver Lion is the game that made the studio’s name, its first big hit by Causley’s own account, among the nine games cleared in Portugal and the first to go live at BCLC. It plays on 5 reels and 4 rows with 1,024 ways, wilds and free spins. Sources disagree on its RTP, so check the info screen rather than trust a number you read somewhere.

The sequel, Silver Lioness 4x, kept the 1,024 ways and the savannah, then added a diamond scatter and free spins that can multiply wins by up to 36 times. LeoVegas had it exclusively in April 2018 before it went out to every partner on 2 May. If you only try two games from this studio, make it these two, played back to back.

Ninety Five Point Something: RTP at Lightning Box Casinos

Here is something worth knowing before you settle in. The return to player figures SlotCatalog lists for the better known Lightning Box games sit a little under the 96% many players treat as normal. Here are five of them, with layout and release date:

Game Released Layout RTP
Astro Cat 2016 8 reels, 1,269 ways 95.44%
Silver Lion 2016 5×4, 1,024 ways sources disagree
Silver Lioness 4x 2018 5×4, 1,024 ways 95.69%
Lightning Horseman 2018 5×3, 40 lines 95.52%
Chicken Fox 2019 5×3, 25 lines 95.54%

A gap of half a percentage point does not decide a single session, but over many spins it adds up. Treat these as entertainment priced accordingly, and before you play at any of the Lightning Box casinos, open the info screen and check the figure for yourself.

Lightning Box Casinos: The Licence Comes Before the Lion

The list at the top of this page shows every open casino in our database that carries Lightning Box games, with closed and blacklisted casinos left out. A place among the Lightning Box casinos on that list says the games are there, nothing more.

Start with the licence. Lightning Box has been approved by regulators in places like Portugal and British Columbia, but what protects you is the licence of the casino itself, and it must cover the country where you live. If online casinos are not legal where you are, do not play.

Next, read the withdrawal terms in our review: limits, processing times and the documents you will need. Open the info screen of each game to confirm its RTP, and if you take a bonus, check that Lightning Box slots count in full towards the wagering. Older games like Astro Cat also have a double up gamble, which is optional and best skipped while you are clearing a bonus. For more studios and their casinos, our studio directory has the full picture, and the slots section lists individual games.
