If you grew up on European fruit machines, a pachislot looks familiar at first glance. Three reels, a handful of lines, sevens and bells. The difference is in the rhythm.
Pachislot is the slot machine branch of pachinko, the pinball style game that has been part of Japanese gaming culture since the first parlour opened in 1930. What players there love is the journey: several stages of anticipation, heavy animation when something is about to happen, and Rush modes where free spins can retrigger in streaks. A quiet base game is normal. The fun lives in the build up.
Golden Hero made that format its calling card. The studio says pachislots are very close to its heart and that it learned what makes them tick by working closely with Japanese studios. Japan is its most important market, though Golden Hero has also pitched these games to European casinos that want to reach Asian players.
Golden Hero started in 2017, and its first game, Jewel Race, arrived in 2018. Both dates come from a 2022 interview with Robert Swan, head of game development at Gamesys, and SlotCatalog agrees on the founding year.
The name most closely tied to the studio is Thomas Nimstad. He has described building Golden Hero after earlier platform work at Maria Bingo, where he started as CTO, and from 2010 at Vera&John, a brand that did well in Japan. That background shows: Golden Hero has always cared as much about the platform and the mobile experience as about the reels themselves.
It also explains the partner programme, which lets independent studios build games on Golden Hero’s platform and focus on content. ORYX Gaming signed Golden Hero as a platform partner in February 2018, and in 2021 SoftGamings added its games to the catalogue it offers casinos.
Golden Hero’s best known games were made as a duo with JTG, short for Japan Technicals Games, a developer of land based pachinko and pachislot machines. Golden Hero handled the platform and online side, JTG the Japanese game design.
According to ORYX, this was the first Japanese pachislot it launched, and a best seller in Asian and Japanese markets. It runs on a 3×3 grid with five lines. Free spins start when the flowers glow, and sevens in a row set off Rush retriggers.
Released in 2019, this one adds an arcade fight. Three VS symbols lock the reels and send a dwarf into battle with a fiery monster, and a win unlocks Treasure Rush free spins. A random Elf Bonus in the base game pays up to 300x the total bet.
SlotCatalog files Hawaiian Dream, Battle Dwarf and the later Oiran Dream under Win Fast, one of JTG’s own brands, not under Golden Hero. Do not be surprised if Golden Hero casinos list them under a different studio name.
In 2021 the Japanese developer Racjin, in pachinko and pachislot since 2004, joined Golden Hero’s partner programme, with its first pachislot set to launch through Solid Gaming that August.
Outside the pachislots, the catalogue is small. SlotCatalog lists 17 Golden Hero titles, all of them video slots, and has found them at casinos in 86 countries.
The two biggest are the jewel games. Jewel Race plays on a 6×6 grid where three or more matching symbols win, with cascades, free spins and multipliers. Jewel Race Winter Edition moves the same grid into the snow and lists a top win of 1,500x.
The rest are compact. Lucky Stones, Macau 8, Imperial Colours and Reel Bonanza use three reels and a single row, Golden Wheel and Wild Dragon step up to 3×3, and Mystery Box is a 4×4 game built around mystery symbols. Every one we looked up lists an RTP between 96% and 96.95% on SlotCatalog.
A 3×1 slot is about as simple as online slots get. One row, three symbols, a result in a second. That simplicity is the appeal, and also the trap.
