What is Storm Gaming known for?

Storm Gaming, whose company name today is Storm Games Limited, is a UK studio based in Wolverhampton and licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. It is known for TV branded slots such as Love Island, Thunderbirds and The Only Way is Essex, and for Megaways titles like Bar-X Megaways and Monsters of Rock Megaways. US group Primero Games took a controlling stake in 2022.

From Pub Machines in Wolverhampton to Storm Gaming Casinos

Richard Sheldon came up through the retail side of British gambling, doing contract work for Blueprint Gaming and producing games and systems software for land based machines before he set up on his own. Sources disagree on the exact year Storm was founded, 2007 in one interview and 2008 in another, so we will leave it at that. Darren Breese, a former Blueprint CEO, is a director and shareholder.

The paperwork tells the same story. The company holds two licences on the UK Gambling Commission register under the name Storm Games Limited: a gaming machine technical licence active since January 2010, and a remote gambling software licence active since June 2018. The registered head office is at the University of Wolverhampton Science Park.

Online came late and carefully. Storm moved into the online space around 2016, and in June 2017 its slot Captain Cashfall launched on Sky Vegas through its long time partner Core Gaming. By then the offline version had already been installed on more than 5,000 gaming terminals. One thing to keep straight: Storm Gaming is not the same company as Stormcraft Studios, a different studio with a similar name.

Thunderbirds, TOWIE and a Villa Full of Islanders

If one thing defines Storm, it is British telly. Back in 2017 the studio said it had invested in licences for The Chase, Thunderbirds and the Carry On film archive, and in May 2018 it agreed to supply ITV branded games such as The Chase, Tipping Point, The Only Way is Essex and Carry On Camping to the handheld tablets in Gala’s retail bingo clubs.

Love Island was the big one. In July 2018 Oryx Gaming added what it called the first officially branded slot based on the ITV2 reality show to its platform. Like Thunderbirds and the Essex game, it is a classic 5×3 slot, the kind built to be understood in two spins by someone who came for the theme.

The Only Way is Essex slot by Storm Gaming, TV show theme with 9 lines

Should a familiar TV show be a reason to play? Not on its own. As the table further down shows, the branded games sit at the lower end of the RTP scale. Enjoy the nostalgia, but read the info screen first.

Megaways Remakes Inside Storm Gaming Casinos

In September 2018 Storm signed a deal with Big Time Gaming to use the Megaways mechanic, where every spin changes the number of symbols per reel and the ways to win can reach 117,649. The studio then did something sensible: it rebuilt its best known names on the new engine.

Monsters of Rock Megaways, a 2019 rock band slot with up to 117,649 ways and a High Voltage feature.

Bar-X and Captain Cashfall, second time around

Bar-X Megaways arrived in September 2019 with the classic fruit machine bar symbols. Captain Cashfall Megaways followed in 2020, set on the captain’s fishing boat, with cascades, mystery symbols, free spins with an uncapped multiplier and three bonus games: Reel’em In, Cans of Cash and Wheel House Fortune.

Monsters of Rock and Magic Merlin

Monsters of Rock Megaways (October 2019) puts cartoon rock stars on the reels and adds a High Voltage feature that clears out the low value symbols, plus a Pick Me bonus. Magic Merlin uses the same Megaways engine with chain reactions, mystery cards and free spins with a progressive multiplier. Sheldon later said that if you get the theme or the maths wrong, a game will not perform, and these four show a studio trying hard to get both right.

Storm Gaming Casinos and the Two RTP Tiers

Put the games side by side and a split appears between the older branded slots and the Megaways titles. These are the figures SlotCatalog lists:

Slot Format RTP listed
Love Island 5×3, 20 lines 94.18%
Thunderbirds 5×3, 20 lines 94.31%
The Only Way is Essex 5×3, 9 lines that pay both ways 94.57%
Magic Merlin Megaways, up to 117,649 ways 95.71%
Captain Cashfall Megaways Megaways, up to 117,649 ways 96.13%
Monsters of Rock Megaways Megaways, up to 117,649 ways 96.29%
Bar-X Megaways Megaways, up to 117,649 ways 96.5%

Roughly two points separate the two groups. That will not decide a single spin, but over a long session it adds up, so if you mostly want the best return, the Megaways titles are the better pick in Storm Gaming casinos. As always, the casino’s own info screen beats any list.

Primero Games, Titanium RGS and the Storm Games Name

Storm is no longer independent. In July 2022 Primero Games, a land based game maker owned by Mike Macke, took a controlling interest in Storm as a faster route into online casinos. Sheldon and Breese stayed on as part of the ownership group. In a 2025 interview Sheldon described Primero Games LLC as the parent company in the USA, with teams in both the UK and the US, and the business now presents itself as Storm Games.

The reason Primero bought in was not only the games. Storm runs its own remote gaming server, Titanium RGS, which hosts its titles and third party content for operators, and Macke praised its track record. On top of that, the studio has used outside distributors for years: Oryx for Love Island in 2018 and Relax Gaming’s Silver Bullet programme from July 2021, when Storm said it had more than 100 titles across slots and bingo. That count includes retail games. SlotCatalog lists 38 online slots, so expect a much shorter shelf in a casino lobby. If a casino runs the Relax catalogue, our Relax Gaming casinos page is a good place to look for Storm titles too.

Storm Gaming Casinos: What to Check Beyond the Brands

The list at the top of this page shows the open Storm Gaming casinos in our database, with closed and blacklisted sites left out. The games were designed mainly for British players, but Sheldon has said they have also done well in Canada, Germany and other regulated markets, so the shelf you see depends a lot on where you live.

First, the licence. The casino needs one that covers your country, and if online casino play is not legal there, do not play. Second, the withdrawal terms: limits, processing times and when identity checks happen, all of which our reviews spell out.

Third, the game settings. Check the RTP in the info screen, and if you are playing with a bonus, ask whether branded slots count in full towards wagering, since some casinos weigh them lower. For studios beyond this one, the CasinoDaddy provider index has the full line up.
